Bonnie Claeson Dies
Bonnie Claeson died on November 02 in New York. She and her partner Joseph Guglielmelli were co-owners of the Black Orchid Bookshop at 303 East 81st Street between First and Second Avenues in Manhattan, New York. The East Site bookshop operated from 1994 through 2007, after Bonnie and Joe were awarded the Raven Award in 2006 from the Mystery Writers of America for their service and work in the mystery community. She was very nice to me every time I visited their bookshop, even if I did not buy any mystery books there. Once I tried to find something different and found a copy of John Harvey's poetry book there. She was 77. (November 14, 2022)
Peter Robinson Dies
Peter Robinson died on October 04 in Toronto, Canada after a brief illness. The Yorkshire-born acquired a PhD in English at York University in Toronto. He introduced Detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks, in his first novel, GALLOWS VIEW (Viking, 1987), which was shortlisted for the 1987 Arthur Ellis Award in the first novel category from the Crime Writers of Canada (CWC) and for the 1987 John Creasey New Blood Dagger Award from the Crime Writers Assoication of Britain (CWA). He did not win any awards for the first time but he did win five Arthurs in the best novel category for PAST REASON HATED (1991), INNOCENT GRAVES (1996), COLD IS THE GRAVE (2000) and BEFORE THE POISON (2011) and SLEEPING IN THE GROUND (2017). He won one Edgar in the short story category for "Missing in Action," first published in the November 2000 issue of Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine. He wrote 27 DCI Banks novels and 6 stand-alones as well as a number of short stories, and The DCI Banks TV series was adapted into the ITV series from 2011 to 2017, featuring Stephen Thompkinson as Banks. Robinson received the 2010 Derrick Murdock Awarad and the 2020 Grand Master Award, both from CWC. He was 72. (October 09, 2022)

No, it is NOT my typing error or anybody's error. Ms. Jacqueline Bublitz has won the two Ngaio Awards for best novel and for best first novel selected by two separate judge groups. Probably it is the first time an winner receives both Ngaio awards.
The winning (first) novel was shortlisted for the 2022 CWA Gold Dagger in UK. The American edition will be published later this year from Emily Bestler Books/Atria. (September 17, 2022)

Elizabeth Gunn Dies
Elizabeth Gunn died on August 30 in Helena, Montana (where she moved this summer to be near her family) after a long illness. The former inn-keeper, private pilot, live-aboard sailor, scuba diver and travel writer began writing mystery novels with TRIPLE PLAY (Walker, 1997). This first novel features Jake Hines, a police detective of fictional Rutherford, Minnesota, modeled after Rochester, Minnesota. There were 9 more Hines novels ending with NOONTIME FOLLIES (Severn, 2015). She started another series starting with COOL IN TUCSON (Severn, 2008), introducing Sara Burke, a divorced police detective in Tucson, Arizona. She started one more series with BURNING MEREDITH (Severn, 2018), introducing retired schoolteacher Alice Adams, who works part-time at the local newspaper in fictional Clark's Fort, Montana. It is probably her last novel. She was 95. (September 12, 2022)

Peter Straub Dies
Peter Straub died on September 04 at New York-Presbiterian Hospital in New York City of complications after a fall. The former English teacher wrote two poetry books (ISHMAEL and OPEN AIR) in 1972 before his first novel, MARRIAGES (Coward McCann, 1973), and his first horror novel, JULIA (Coward McCann, 1975), which was turned into the 1976 movie, "The Hauting of Julia," starring Mia Farrow. He may have been famous as a horror writer, penning GHOST STORY (Coward McCann, 1979), which became the 1981 film of the same name starring Fred Astaire, and co-authoring (with Stephen King) THE TALISMAN (Viking 1984) and its sequal BLACK HOUSE (Random House, 2001). He wrote several mystery short stories, such as "Pork Pie Hat," (first published in MURDER FOR HALLOWEEN, edited by Michele Slung & Roland Hartman [aka. Otto Penzler]; Mysterious, 1994) and "Ronald, D----," (first published in an Adams Round Table anthology; MURDER IN THE FAMILY; Berkley, 2002). By the way, He was an avid Raymond Chandler fan. Michael Malone Dies
Michael Malone died on August 19 of pancreatic cancer at his home in Clinton, Connecticut. The former college professor's first novel was PAINTING THE ROSES RED (Random House, 1974), a comic novel. His first mystery novel, UNCIVIL SEASONS (Delacorte, 1983), introduced Cuddy Mangum and Justin Savile, two police detectives in fictional Hillston, N.C. After writing the second Cuddy-Justin novel, TIME'S WITNESS (Little Brown,1989), Malone served as head writer on the ABC-TV soap opera "One Life to Live" from 1991 to 1996, and wo an Emmy in 1994. His short story, "Red Clay" first published in the anthology MURDER FOR LOVE (edited by Otto Penzler; Delacorte 1996) won the 1997 short story Edgar, and was collected in his story collection, RED CLAY, BLUE CADILLAC (Sourcebooks, 2002). His 2005 novel, THE KILLING CLUB (Hyperion, 2005) was "co-written" with Marcie Walsh, a fictional writer on the soap opera "One Life to Live." He was writing the fourth Cuddy-Justin novel when he died at the age of 79. (September 01, 2022)
